To Be Or Not To Be

Playoffs . . . We have to have Playoffs in College Football. This is being shouted throughout the college football landscapes. Timmy "the brain" Brando has been thumping the message for the past several seasons in hopes of ending the BCS. Timmy "the brain" cheers for the like of Boise State and TCU to clinch a spot in the National Championship Game in order to create chaos and mayhem for the BCS. Lately, his cause has gathered steam with the support of Gary "Ray Romano" Danielson and of all else the Commish of the Big Ten, Jim Delaney.

At the root of Timmy "the brain" and Gary "Ray Romano" is thesis the inclusion of all teams to have an opportunity to play for the championship. However noble and grand this seems on paper, it is not fair nor feasible in the scope of "Big Boy Football". On one side, the Texas, the Alabamas and the Ohio States of the NCAA are responsible for the hundreds of millions of dollars being funneled into the NCAA. Their schedules for the most part are brutal playing before packed stadiums from 75,000 to 100,000 people every weekend. TCU to their credit has stepped up and decided the best way to get a piece of the pie is to get in the kitchen and start baking. They did this by joining the Big 12. Boise State is still standing on the curb with it's hand out with its version of college football welfare. The smaller schools dummy down their schedules and are being rewarded by playing in BCS Bowl Games.

The goal of any college sport is to crown a true national champion. The BCS was created for this purpose. In this regard they have succeeded. The BCS has been in place since 1998. Prior to the formation of the BCS. The Associated Press's number one and two teams met in bowl games only 8 times in 56 seasons. Since the BCS era number one (1) has played number two (2) in twelve straight seasons. Isn't this the ultimate goal?

The Big ten proposal . . . . basically is a plus one playoff involving the top four teams with the top two teams receiving home field advantage.

For the sake of argument, let's say Boise State is number two (2), which is a very real possibility gain the sympathy support they receive every year. Alabama is ranked third (3rd) and has to travel to Idaho to play in front of 40,000 people in the dead of winter. This is after playing through a brutal SEC schedule and the SEC Title Game. How can this be fair or equitable?

Under the BCS, a loss is extremely detrimental to a team's chance to win the National Championship. This in itself forces top teams to try and win every game. In a bracket playoff scenario the top teams may pull or rest their top players or to protect them from injury, such as the case with the NFL. Under the current system with the BCS this is not likely to occur.

The addition of the plus one playoff sounds good in theory, so good that instead of being fair to the top four, let's really be fair expand the playoffs to 8 teams and from there 10 and so on. Don't fool yourselves it will happen. It has in every major sport. The NFL, MLB, NBA, college basketball and baseball and right on cue the PAC 12 Commissioner is rumored to have crafted a play-off scenario that would have an eight (8) team play-off. Strangely enough Mike Slive, the SEC Commissioner has been noticeably quiet on the subject.

If you ask one hundred (100) sportswriters what NFL teams is the best they will say the Green Bay Packers, I agree, but the Packers didn't even make it to the Super Bowl. The New York Giants gained momentum and rode that to a World's Championship.

In College Football, for the past twelve (12) years, with the exception of 2003, these have been in clear-cut number one.

Under the current format a single loss can end a team's chance at a National Championship or enhancing a team's chance with unexpected victories. This makes every game, particularly at the beginning of the season important.

This past year was a very exciting topsy-turvy year. LSU beat Oregon, and every week fans would watch Oregon climb their way back up the polls. This scenario was repeated week after week across the landscape of college football. Week after week fans were talking and breathing college football. The Alabama vs. LSU game in Tuscaloosa had the atmosphere of a championship game. Do you think the excitement would be as great with a playoff system in places? Do you think fans everywhere would be sitting on the edge of their seats, checking scores, cheering losses if there were a play-off system in place.
